Overview

who

Canford Classics has for sale this stunning RHD 1972 911S. The 2.4S is one of the most sought after early 911 models, and especially a 1972 model with its unique and 'one year only' rear wing oil tank access. Presented in its original colour Light Ivory it has the all important original engine and gearbox.  Options include sunroof and rear apron.

We could now list all he modifications that Porsche made for the 1972 model and how things changed from the previous 2.2 model,  but we feel it’s better to focus on this exact car as that’s what you are interested in! The current owner requested that we provide an extensive list of the works undertaken in the sales description,  to ensure that the new owner understands that they are buying a great 911.

This 911S was purchased by the current owner in 2010 and was given to Early911 (Porsche restorer)  Works undertaken included an engine rebuild and a bare metal respray in the original colour, at a cost of £30,000.

Roll on ten years, the owner has decided to sell his S and requested Canford Classics meticulously check  the car over before the sale commences. In no particular order the extensive works carried out include; a full suspension refurbishment. This means the entire running gear was removed from the car and restored, being fitted with new bearings and bushes throughout. We rebuilt the steering rack – fitted new turbo tie rods, ball joints, changed all the fuel lines: including the rear flexi hoses and all brake lines.  The entire braking system was restored (including a full rebuild of the S front aluminium calipers) plus flexi hoses, hand brake cables, shoes, spreaders, master cylinder, pads and discs are all new. Even the foot pedal assembly has been rebuilt. As the front/trunk was all stripped out we also fitted a new fuel tank and sender plus re-sealed the entire floor pan before re-installing all the restored suspension/engine and gearbox.  The oil tank and oil lines were removed and painted plus a new oil tank sender fitted. The long sill lines were cleaned, plugged and painted. Even the heater pods were refurbished with new cables. The drive shafts have been rebuilt and four new CV joint installed.

The engine was rebuilt in 2010-11 and has covered approx. 9k miles since.  Whilst Canford had the engine and gearbox removed from the car we fully serviced the 2.4S engine, cleaned and powder coated all the tinware, plus fitted new full clutch and flywheel. A small hole was noticed in the exhaust so the owner requested a new muffler to be fitted. The oil in the gearbox has been changed and new earth strap fitted, plus the mounting bar has been powder coated, and new engine and gearbox mounts fitted.

Once the iconic Fuchs wheels had been removed from the car Canford also refurbed all 5 wheels. They now look perfectly placed and fitted with new centre caps and wheel nuts. The interior is a pleasant place to be and is in good condition. The carpet looks to have been changed when the body work was undertaken and all parts are operational. The end product is this 1972 911S, and even after a 10 year old body restoration it still looks fresh and ready for a new owner to enjoy.

We understand that this 911S has an interesting history, and at one point was owned by Bill McGrath (the well-known car dealer).  It was sold by his daughters after his passing and and has covered very few miles in the last 15 years.

Canford have enjoyed working on the this rare RHD S and hope the new owner enjoys this 911 as much as we do. The understated colour, stunning 911 lines and the driving pleasure make this a 911 which would suit any driver.  Since being with Canford £28,200 has been spent on this car, which is documented within the history file. Recent times have influenced the current prices of 911s and so this is a good opportunity to buy a 911S.

Cars can be seen and inspected in our show room and Canford will ensure correct and safe social distancing procedures are followed.
