For sale at Canford Classics, this breathtaking 1970 right-hand drive 2.2 S in Silver Metallic, dubbed Phoenix Rising by Total 911 in issue 79.
This beautiful car had somewhat of a sad life until it was painstakingly restored and pieced back together by the team at Canford Classics. Having suffered from a workshop fire and then filled with water by the fire service it was then left outside to rot and seemingly forgotten about. This rare little gem was deemed unsavable by many, but luckily when Canford Classics found it and the results are what you now see.
No part was left overlooked during its restoration back in 2011. Many would have re-shelled the car deeming this to be more cost effective. However, originality was key with this restoration and keeping the matching numbers was the first priority. Once the car arrived at Canford Classics the shell was braced to stop it flexing, with the chassis measurements and window apertures immobilised in metal. Then the panels could be removed with what was left being bolted to a Celette jig before extensive metal work could begin. New panels were used and those which could not be sourced were carefully fabricated in order to remain in keeping with the original finish of the car.
The engine was also restored, enabling it to remain matching numbers and benefits from a fully rebuilt mechanical fuel injection system and complete detailing. The engine also has a plethora of new parts, bringing it up to a healthy 184.7 BHP at 6650 RPM with 146 Ft-lb of torque at 6550 RPM, when tested and tuned on the rolling road.
Such was the extent of this project that all external brightwork was stripped, polished and anodised ensuring it returned back to its very best, and the original gauges were refurbished in order to keep their originality and to retain the correct ink date stamps.
Since its restoration in 2011, the car has had a comprehensive list of works completed, all documented showing the care and attention that has been taken. The remaining indicator of the hardship this car has endured is the melted key, reminding us of how much has been achieved since the devastating fire. All that’s left to do is put the windows down, listen to the purr of the 2.2ltr engine and enjoy. It will never fail to put a smile on your face, and words do not do justice to how beautiful this car is.
